Being the ‘spare’ to the Queen’s ‘heir’, Princess Margaret got to live a rather different – and much more fun – life to that of her older sister.
She was known for her love of a good party, was frequently photographed with a cigarette holder clamped in her mouth and got to mingle with the A-list celebrities of day.
According to Ma’am Darling by Craig Brown, she would spend two hours in bed chain smoking every monring.
So it’s fair to say, she had very few of the same cares the Queen had.
This includes being diplomatic and nice-as-pie to everyone she met – even friends and people hosting her.
One of Margaret’s most stinging put-downs has recently come to light, thanks to Vanessa Kirby who plays her in The Crown .
On once occasion portrayed in the show, having been asked by a host if they wanted to see some new photographs of the family’s children, Margaret did not mince her words.
Vanessa revealed, “Margaret said, ‘Why on earth would I want to see that?'”
We’re pretty sure there’s a more delicate way of politely declining the offer, but anyway.
“It’s just perfect that she didn’t give a crap about someone else’s kids, but the fact that she always says what she means – amazing,” Vanessa tells PEOPLE .
“She is so unique, and wonderful and vivid and entirely herself,” she adds.
“Somebody who is that vibrant, you can’t help but know you are going to have fun! I think the naughty ones and the underdogs are always the best people to play and to watch.”
“Vibrant” is perhaps putting it kindly…
