It was thought the mysterious character could be none other than jailbird Jim McDonald (played by Charles Lawson), and the actor who plays him has finally spoken out.
A fan asked the actor on Twitter: “@charlie_lawson1 is big jim coming back?!?!?! #corrie.”
To which Charles responded: “No idea!!!!!”
However, as nothing has been confirmed yet, Jim’s return can’t be ruled out.
Kate told The Daily Star Sunday: “We are having a discussion about bringing someone back. It’s a very well-established character…a long-standing name.
“It wouldn’t be for a long period. It would be a short stint.
“I can’t say more than that at this stage. But fans should watch this space.”
It seems as though plenty of viewers would love to see the hard man return, with some even suggesting he could deal with Phelan (Connor McIntyre).
One wrote: “I would love @charlie_lawson1 to return to @itvcorrie again for another stint, 2018 is the year Jim is suppose to be getting released from prison. @Beverleycallard @simongregson123 #Corrie.”
“Think corrie needs Jim McDonald back to sort out Pat Phelan. What about u Pat, ha ha?” another suggested.
A third added.“I think liz will contact Jim McDonald he will come back with a few heavies to deal with #phelan #Corrie #CoronationStreet @itvcorrie.”
However, his ex-wife Liz McDonald (Beverly Callard) and son Steve McDonald (Simon Gregson) probably aren’t as keen.
Although, it would be a timely arrival as Jim is set to be released from prison later this year.
He’s currently serving time for armed robbery, but he could be heading back to his old haunt.
The conman was last featured back in 2014 where he was seen on the inside, running an illegal booze scheme where he had earned himself the nickname “The Landlord”.
He ended up blackmailing Peter Barlow (Chris Gascoyne) by handing out booze to the alcoholic.
His behaviour and the fallout from Steve and Liz finding out what he’d been up to lead to him getting an extended sentence.
But could he back to make amends?
Coronation Street continues tomorrow at 7.30pm on ITV.
